Puppet Parade

The Cathedral Village Arts Festival is holding a Puppet Parade on May 25.

Friday May 18, 7-10pm, and Saturday May 19, 10am-2pm. Cathedral Community Centre. Open public workshops to help decorate the giant parade puppet, or build your own smaller flapping-bird-on-a-stick puppets. Spread the word!

Friday May 25, Puppet Parade! Meet at Holy Rosary School at 7pm, parade starts at 7:30. Wear masks or costumes, bring puppets (any style), or just come prepared to help carry one of the giant group puppets.

Donations of lightweight fabric, bamboo poles, wire hangers or tomato frames can be dropped off at the Eat Healthy Foods.

The Infringement Cabaret

the producer of Regina’s International infringement Festival and “Car Stories”,
is now accepting submissions for
The Infringement Cabaret.
December 8th, 2006
Manhattan Room

There will be no International infringement Festival during the summer of 2007,
however, Artistree Productions will be coordinating a series of participatory cabarets.
The infringement Festival aims to provide a creative outlet for artists to experiment and collaborate,
and we believe ongoing smaller participatory events will be more sustainable.

Traditionally, cabarets were a meeting place for artists where performance took place amongst peers;
they were intimate, small-scale, but intellectually ambitious revues.
Cabarets acted as artistic laboratories,
and as a critically reflective mirror of topical events, morals, politics and culture.
They were interactive, confrontational, and playful.

We are seeking short acts of any discipline.
We welcome dancers, actors, musicians, comedians, puppeteers, acrobats, filmmakers, etc.
We encourage artists to submit acts that require minimal set-up.
We challenge artists to use the Infringement Cabaret as a chance to experiment and innovate their work.

The infringement Festival was a success.

36 artists/groups presented over 60 performances over 8 days. Shows were well-attended and we have been very inspired by the results and feedback.

We are pleased to announce that there will be no infringement Festival next summer (2007). Why not, you may ask.

While preparing a grant proposal for next year's festival, we realized that perhaps a festival is not the best format to promote a spirit of collaboration and experimentation in Regina's arts community. The festival aims to provide a sustainable creative outlet for artists, and we believe more frequent smaller participatory events would have more impact on the community.

Artistree Productions, the producer of Regina's International infringement Festival and "Car Stories", is currently planning ongoing participatory cabarets. We are having a mega phone fundraiser at gabbos on wednesday. Bring $3 an instrument, amp or other noise maker and the willingness to havea good time. A noise group will perform and strangeness will be had.

This meeting is for all who are interested in getting involved in the Festival as an iF Team Leader or iF Agent.

So, the Avenue crew was going to make a calendar at one point in time. I just found this wikkid PDF calendar a design site lets people download. This would be much easier for us to put together.....this would allow people to print their own versions if they wanted. It's not a "marketable" item, but it's certainly a fun little project for us to share little images and day planning.

Fellowship of Reason

Here is an interesting new religious movement I hit upon in my travels. I am NOT endorsing it and I know very little about it. However the idea seems to spring from some of the same issues we are dealing with at Creative Avenue, so I thought people might be interested. The movement, called "eudaimonism," is based on the idea that churches provide the important moral, social, and cultural support that binds societies together, and that it is possible to use the church structure without adhering to doctrines of supernatural faith.

While I personally adhere to a faith-based spiritual community, I strongly believe that Canada needs organizations that can bring people of divergent and even antithetical religious beliefs into the same fold in order to work together towards the building of tolerant community. Such an organization must be able to bring atheists, agnostics, nontheists, post-theists, and people of all kinds of supernaturalist beliefs into communion and right relation with each other. Let's keep our eyes open for such groups.

Valentine's Day is a-coming!

8am - 4 directors are grouped together at random with a designer, a short script with the theme of Luv, some actors, a 12-hour time limit, and $50 for a set, costumes, and props.

7pm - You arrive for cocktails and tapa-tizers while the 4 production teams scramble to get their shows together.

8pm - Curtain up and the games begin.

9:30 ish - Everyone proceeds to dance the drunken night away. This fun is going to be at the Owl, this Saturday (the 11th), for the low price of $12! That includes tapas, the show, and dancing! So bring your boo to eat, drink, laugh, and shake-it-shake-it.

We are having a party at Gabbo's on March 1st. It will be yet another wonderful party put on by our crew of artistic misfits. It's focused on the world of words.....celebrating how words change the way you see our world. It's also a little celebration of our groups name change.
Starting at 8:30pm, bring $3 for enterance, we will have board games, word games, and various word play. After, we'll take some of the words we find from our games....have a little poetry, play a little music, dance......and shake.

pi is considered a transcendental number,
approximately 3.114159…etc., representing the ratio of
the circumference to the diameter of a circle. It is a
place where we can actually touch infinity – something
both devastating and euphoric. Like a broken record,
the numbers are repeated yet the sequence is forever
changing. John Noestheden has assembled nine diverse
artists to generate an Interdisciplinary Performance
Event based on this astonishing number.

Biographies:

Adam Budd works in cinema, video, and performance.
Currently an Artist in Residence in Saskatoon, he is
in the process of finishing his first short film. His
work has been shown in various Canadian cities. Adam
makes his home in Southwest Saskatchewan with the
winter Chinooks and his family.

Felipe Diaz is a Regina based interdisciplinary
artist. As part of the performance collective One
Night Only, Diaz has presented work in Toronto,
Vancouver, Sackville, Calgary and Regina. Felipe
completed his MFA at the University of Regina in 2004
and currently works as the GM of the Regina Film Pool.

Blair Fornwald is an interdisciplinary artist whose
work generally has a performative element. In 2002,
she received a BFA in Intermedia from the University
of Regina and is currently an MFA candidate at the
University of Western Ontario. She works both
independently and with the One Night Only collective.

Tanis Keiner was originally from Regina and is a
Quebec City based performance and multimedia artist.
She holds a BFA in sculpture from the University of
Regina and is pursuing a BA in French at Laval
University. Timid and shy, her performance pieces
often reflect her introverted nature.

Steve Kirkland is a mathematician and part-time
criminal mastermind. He enjoys sitting quietly,
drinking coffee, and the theory and applications of
nonnegative matrices.

John Noestheden’s work is represented in public
galleries, museums and private collections across
Canada and the United States. In the 80’s he
introduced Skywriting drawings/performances over
Toronto and Kingston. John publicly announced 23,000
digits of the square root of two in 2004. He
collaborates with both Robin Poitras and Michele
Sereda in performative works.

Robin Poitras is a Regina-based, nationally recognized
dance presenter and is one of Saskatchewan's most
prolific dance, performance and installation creators.
She has been actively engaged in contemporary dance
practice since the early 80's. In 1986, she co-founded
New Dance Horizons and continues to be its Artistic
Director.

Anna Scott is a Regina-based performance, installation
and new media artist who examines ideas of shame,
power, truth and the self with a common thread of
humor. She is a founding member of One Night Only, the
Regina based performance art collective, and has
presented work across Canada.

Michele Sereda is artistic director of the Regina
based Curtain Razors. Her extensive performing history
traverses theatre, dance, and performance art. She
has studied with a variety of organizations across
Western Canada such as: The Western Front Society, One
Yellow Rabbit, New Dance Horizons and Experimental
Dance and Music.

Acknowledgements: The University of Regina, the
Faculty of Fine Arts and the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

artmaking techniques with the medium of vinyl records. The collection
includes both visual and audio art, and spans painting, sculpture,

records, intricately painted records, etched blank records, and
sculpted records are just a few of the things you will see with this
show…live concerts, radio documentaries, and no-holds-barred

Hurrah!

When I was a little boy, I saw a TV show about this incredible man who built enormous and beautiful towers out of junk. Unfortunately I couldn't remember what they were called or where they were. Tonight I learned that they are called "Watt's Towers" and they were built by a man named Simon Rodilla in L.A. in the early/mid-20th century. You must see these towers.

It is very important to that we think heavily on the logo subject. Two key points to ponder: using one selected masterpiece as a frame(insert images inside)/stamp (when srunk), and are we going to use some collective cash to purchase a space at the cathedral village arts festival.

Two weeks off

So, we've worked long and hard and now it's time for a break. The Wednesday of the 21st and the wed. after that will be days off for the little art collective that could.

There busy family and friend things happening this holiday season and we should spend it spreading cheer.

A few events will be happening around the city that are worth mentioning:
Dec. 21st @ gabbo's winter solstice - 9:30 and on - 5@door - 2 bands and some dj's
Dec 22nd @ Soho's - the Glam party......I don't know much about this, but it sounds like some good dance performances will be happenin'

that's all I know about for the most part. Keep your ear to the ground though.
There's always a good snow sledding day, or chirstmas carols.

So, I went to the "public forum" put on by Common Weal organization. It was an inspiring afternoon and evening. A panel discussed there various community projects and gave their insights into community collaboration. I was most intriged by Sue Hemphill, she's a Program Consultant for the Manitoba Arts Council (MAC). She seemed to have the clearest view of how to work with communities. If anyone is curious about the rest of the discussion I'll be more than willing to fill you in.

Lecture at RPL

There is a lecture at the RPL on WED. DEC. 7th. It's on city spaces and social networks and various other aspects of people/artists living in a city. It goes from 12:15pm to 1pm and makes for a good lunch time thought or two.

I think this is the last one in the series and should be checked out if your interested in that kind of stuff.

Marshall Mcluhan

We had a Marshall Mcluhan night yesterday and had a viewing of "Mcluhan's Wake". After the video we had a good talk about the effects of media on people and tried to understand Marshall Mcluhan abit more. I think our group could use a little understanding of his ideas. I don't know if I can place down what I got out of the whole night, but I would like to read his book "Understanding Media". That book seems like a good place to start. Besides the following links.

Stretching my legs

So I finally found my way here and I promise that I will write from time to time. I feel pretty good about our weekly meeting last night. Thanks to some people's persistence I think that the rest of us are getting exctied about the opportunity to start making and selling some creative work and merchandise. I did a bit of checking around and it looks like we could have a table at the Cathedral Village Arts festival for about $80, and one at Folk Festival for slightly more. I think that the ideas that we tossed around last night (making canvas bags, icorporating a logo, etc) will work well.

I am also looking forward to the film night tonight and hope that it is well-attended. I will write something about it later on. Today is my day to sit back and read about Marshall McLuhan. I didn't know anything about this person last week, but it seems that his name is buzzing around and I know some folks who are pretty excited about his ideas.

A thanks should go out to the adventurers that came down from Vancouver and Saskatoon to make some crazy music happen at Gabbo's last Wednesday. All in attendance had a great time and those who didn't attend just missed out on a grand old event. I look forward to more strange meetings from different musical localities. When can we start planning the next one? I'm still excited about having an experimental night in the Regina city green house.

Also, remember that we are having a movie night on Thursday with the focus of Marshall Mcluhan. I think people can meet up around 6:30 at the Filmpool on Scarth St.(Near Tramps and Dots) and the movie will start at 7 and a little talk will happen later. Dennie also found a little multi-media Mcluhan thing at the library. Should be interesting!

Art Sale

Sure, it may be to late to mention this, but we had the little art sale at Roca Jacks this sunday(today, nov. 27th). It was a pleasure to see all the art up on the walls, but I wish there was a better way of making deals with people trying to buy the art. It was alittle awkward trying to buy things. I think next time it should be more of a silent auction. We could just start at a base price for each piece and let people bid to their hearts content. I've seen it done at the 5th parallel art gallery and it's fun and easy to implement.

There should be a sale in mid December again. We could try to get the christmas gift crowd.

Those who tried to watch it tonight will by now know that "Saturday Night in Saskatchewan"--Connect Festival's only media appearance in 10 years--was preempted by a football game, several commercial breaks, and a bunch of irrelevant commentary, leaving no Connect coverage at all. If you are as pissed off as I am--and I hope you are--please do as I have done and send a polite but stern criticism to CBC. You will find a "contact us" link at the bottom of their website: www.cbc.ca. If they get enough complaints, they'll show it again. Remember: this is the community we are working for being silenced--once again--by the commercial industry and an athletic elite.

Also please note my comment on Derek's previous post. It appears that this forum doesn't make comment posts very obvious at first glance. We're going to have to make an effort to remember to check all our entries for comments that have been added.

Shaping Regina

A bunch of us kids at "The Coop" or "Avenue Collective" or what have you, went to the Shaping Regina conference about a week ago. It provided good insight into what people from around the city want to have in their city for the next hundred years. We got to meet some nice people that all had a desire to make the city a better, interesting, safer place. I started going to the Shaping Regina website and have been adding comments and ideas to their forum to try to get things moving around on there a little bit.

There is totally something there to start playing with. I would like to see where it goes.
